JAVIER CALLEJA

After more than a year and a half without a new edition, Mármol&Fa is proud to present one of its most anticipated collaborations. The recent work of Javier Calleja confirms his consolidation within the international contemporary art scene, developing a highly recognizable visual language through expressive figures with a childlike appearance. The tension between apparent simplicity and irony-laden complexity lies at the heart of his appeal, creating images that resonate both emotionally and conceptually, far beyond the purely aesthetic.

In these works, Calleja explores the contrast between form and content: his characters, drawing on comic and pop art references, convey tenderness and disquiet, engaging the viewer with direct gazes that seem innocent yet hide irony and ambiguity. He constantly revisits his beginnings through pencil drawings full of depth, with three-dimensional eyes and subtle touches of color that never distract from the work’s message. His practice reflects on identity, perception, and the viewer’s role, demonstrating that what appears simple can hold profound complexity, consolidating his style in a playful, emotive, and deeply contemporary approach.

My work is about emotions, not about concepts
