MARION PECK

Marion Peck is the queen of American pop surrealism. An artist who fascinates us and with whom we share a deep friendship and affection that has lasted for more than a decade. You probably already know her, but here are a few facts. She grew up in Seattle, Washington. She studied fine arts in Rhode Island and New York. She currently lives in Portland, Oregon. Too American not to feel the pain of today’s America.

She is the partner of fellow artist Mark Ryden. For some reason, his name probably sounds more familiar. It often happens. Labels aside, Marion’s work stands firmly on its own, far from easy readings or comfortable hierarchies. Her voice is unmistakable, personal, and quietly powerful.

She doesn’t paint fast. She doesn’t paint big. She doesn’t paint easy. Quite the opposite. Marion always paints in oil, a medium that demands time and precision. She is drawn to small formats — she doesn’t paint to impress — and she openly admits that her works do not have a single interpretation. Sometimes they don’t even have one at all.

Her paintings are dreamlike scenes that each viewer can make their own. She doesn’t consider herself a storyteller, but a painter. Images matter to her far more than words. The visual over the literary. The pictorial over the narrative. Fascinated by classical mythology and astrology, which she sees as tools to understand the world around her and herself, her work is precise, subtle, sharp and deeply perfectionist. The upcoming edition has been personally supervised by Marion, who has infused each piece with her unmistakable personal touch.

My paintings all have stories, which I hope are different for everyone who sees them
